What is the definition of optimal range in science?

well, you really have to decide what the effect is which would be optimum, but the "optimum range" is the range (of something) where the system works the closest to what is predicted or expected or, most likely, DESIRED.

This might be a range of concentrations where the response is linear and thus easily calibrated using standards and a regression line, or it might be where the rate per unit objects is maximum, or it might be where the product purity is the highest.

It really isn't a question of science, but a question of word meaning. The optimum range is the range where what you want to happen, happens BEST.
